Sometimes you just want to fit as much into one day as humanly possible.
This is that day.
For this itinerary, we highly recommend hiring a car. The island buses are fantastic, but having your own wheels gives you the freedom to squeeze every last drop out of your day.
6:30am | First Ferry of the Day
Jump aboard the 6.30am SeaLink ferry from Townsville and arrive on Maggie with a full day ahead of you.
Best of Magnetic and Isle Hire are two of the closest car hire companies to the ferry terminal. We highly recommend booking online in advance so you can get straight into exploring.
Trust us, it'll be worth the early alarm.
7:00am | The Forts Walk
First stop, one of Magnetic Island's most iconic walks.
The Forts combines incredible lookouts, World War II history and, if you're lucky, koalas snoozing in the gum trees.
Getting there early means cooler temperatures, fewer people and a better chance of spotting wildlife.
Bring plenty of water and allow around two hours to explore the walking tracks, lookouts and historic fortifications.
9:30am | Arcadia
Head down to Arcadia and make your way to Bremner Point, home to the resident Allied Rock Wallabies and some of the island's best views back towards Townsville.
If the ocean is calm, grab your snorkel gear and explore the Geoffrey Bay Snorkel Trail. You'll find the Moltke wreck, giant clams, sections of an aircraft wreck and plenty of tropical marine life. When the visibility is good, it's absolutely incredible.
If conditions aren't ideal for snorkelling, head around the corner to Alma Bay instead.
It's one of the island's favourite swimming beaches for a reason.
12:30pm | Lunch Time
Time to refuel.
Just before you climb the hill into Picnic Bay, you'll find Nomads, home to Island Burger.
It's Andrew's favourite lunch stop on the island.
Ask him what to order and he'll tell you the Motherclucka every single time.
I'll be over here ordering the loaded fries.
We've accepted we're creatures of habit.
2:00pm | Jet Ski Time
Now for a bit of fun on the water!
Head back to Horseshoe Bay and join us at Magnetic Island Jet Skis for a supervised jet ski hire.
Choose between 30 or 60 minutes of riding around our designated hire area, with no licence or previous experience needed.
It's a completely different way to experience Horseshoe Bay, and there's plenty of room to have some fun.
3:00pm | Reward Yourself
You've earned it.
Grab a gelato from Adele's Cafe before deciding how you want to spend the rest of the afternoon.
Afternoon | Choose Your Own Adventure
You could easily spend the rest of your day in Horseshoe Bay, and we wouldn't blame you.
Hire a stand-up paddleboard, go for a swim or take a wander through the Horseshoe Bay Lagoon.
If you're lucky, you might spot the beautiful Blue Tiger Butterflies in the Butterfly Forest, or head over to Bounce for the afternoon rainbow lorikeet feeding.
There's no shortage of ways to fill a few hours here.
Sunset | One Last Adventure
If you've still got some energy left, make your way over to Picnic Bay.
Take the short walk up to Hawking's Point, one of our favourite little hikes on the island. Allow around 30 minutes for the return walk, and trust us, the views are worth every step.
Or, if your legs have had enough for one day, wander along the heritage-listed Picnic Bay Jetty before settling in for a drink at one of our favourite local spots, Maggie Island Brewery.
Not a bad way to finish the day.
A Day Well Spent!
By now, you'll have walked, snorkelled, spotted wildlife, ridden a jet ski, seen secluded parts of the island, explored four of Maggie's villages and watched the sun disappear behind the island. We'd call that a pretty good day!
The Adventure Day Trip.
One day on Maggie. As much adventure as you can squeeze into it.
